A podcast script is a roadmap of your episode describing what all elements will be incorporated in the whole segment. Generally, there are two ways of writing podcast scripts:
- Proper writeup
- Pointers
Some podcasters prefer reading the whole script word to word while others prefer preparing a script just for reference. A quick tip here is- Do not sound like you are just reading the whole script, be interactive! Podcast write-up doesn’t have a single template, it depends upon the podcaster or the producer. Though there’s no fixed layout, there are a few key elements that must be assimilated during the preparation of the script.
Below mentioned are a few chief elements:
Introduction
This segment requires you to prepare a paragraph that can act as an opening for the episode. It should talk about the podcast attributes. It can also encompass details about the host followed by the introduction of the guest in case of an interview podcast. Every week you can alter the content but it should cater to its main purpose.
E.g: Hello everyone, we are back with another episode of (Podcast Title). I am (Hostname) your host for today. In this episode, we will have a conversation with (Guest name) and know about their experiences/thoughts.
The prime part
In this wodge, the host will talk about the major piece of the topic. It can be in the form of addressing a problem, proffering information, or interviewing the guest. This is paramount to your episode. If this piece of script is not drafted perfectly then all other elements would remain void.
There’s a 3 step structure commonly followed while writing a podcast script:
Setup
The host starts with introducing the problem by mentioning an incident or an example following with discussing the key points about that problem inducing curiosity among the listeners.
Discussing/Addressing
The subplot and obstacles are discussed. The opinions, thoughts and ideas of the hosts, co-hosts and the guests are put forward. It should be crafted in such a way that it keeps the audience hooked and indulged to continue listening to the episode.
Resolution
The content should be concluded in this section heading towards the climax of the whole episode. Here you have to be prepared with the final takeaways from the guest/creator. If it’s not an interview podcast, you have to summarise the whole topic or jot down the solutions to the problem. This section builds up the ending of the episode.
Outro
The Call to Action would be the specifics of this part of the script. The host is entailed to convey the CTA of his/her podcast followed by the teaser of the next episode. Feedback details can also be shared. The entire episode should be closed with this nugget.
If these pointers are not subsumed, the script might become irrelevant. These are important checkpoints that you should look for while drafting or planning the write up otherwise your script will remain disorganised and unstructured.
