You are creating your podcast for the right kind of audience. The people who resonate with you, value your brand content and most importantly will take action based on your content.
Someone who does that is your ideal customer avatar. In simpler words, your ideal listener is your ideal podcast avatar. He/she is the same person for whom your are creating content, with whom you would like to share your brand story. He/she is the one who will be a part of your community of loyal listeners and most importantly will take action based on your podcast content.
Criteria to keep in mind while mapping your ideal podcast avatar
- Demographics
- Job profile
- Interests/ How does he/she chills
Demographics
Remember the internet chat age of MSN and yahoo chat messengers? Our 1st question used to be , “ASL please?” ASL means age, sex and location. This is the first thing you need to figure out about your ideal podcast avatar. This is only a framework but we need to provide as much details as possible.
Just to make it clear, let us take an example: If you are a nutritionist and your podcast is about healthy and clean eating then your demographics will majorly include women, mostly about 20 to 50 and can be from metropolitan and big cities of India.
The more specific your podcast idea, more clear you will be about your podcast avatar. For exp. being a nutritionist, you are a specialist for post pregnancy nutrition needs and weight loss. Now your listener would be women from the age of 23-38 who have just delivered a baby and buying infant products online and offline. They can be from metro and tier 2 cities as well.
Job Profile
Once you are sure about podcast avatar’s age, gender and location, now you should be working on his/her work profile. Is this podcast for young entrepreneurs or it is for motivational speakers or trainers? You should be able to answer these kind of questions. Be very specific while defining your audience.
If you are a digital marketer and you would like to teach the basics of digital marketing then your podcast avatar can be a young entrepreneur or a freelancer trying to set-up his/her brand.
Further on, you can work on specifications like will your podcast be more helpful to creative entrepreneurs or aspiring authors or content writing freelancers? Again the key is the more specific you are with your podcast content, more clearer you will be about your podcast avatar and vice versa.
Interests or How does he/she chills
Is he/she ‘Netflix and chill’ kind of a person or prefers reading books? Does he/she prefer staying out and clubbing or prefers staying home with a warm cup of hot chocolate on a winter night? If he/she reads then what kind of books does he/she reads, fiction or non fiction?
If your podcast avatar is a young entrepreneur and likes reading then he may have interest in reading biographies and autobiographies of successful entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, etc. What kind of blogs or vlogs he/she will follow? Is he active on social media? If yes, then he prefers LinkedIn or Instagram and also what kind of digital content does he consume? Is he an android or apple user?
Every detail matters.
You need to create a detailed character-sketch of your podcast avatar. This will help you aligning your content according to your audience. The relevancy of the content will increase and you will be able to build a dedicated community for your podcast.
Pro tip: When creating social media campaigns and ad campaigns, you can use the same process and your posts and content will become more relevant hence more engaging. Also, your social media ads will reach the right kind of audience.
