The audio and video space has been on a boom in the past millennial years! “We have so much access to video and audio recording equipment that it’s kind of the new pen and paper!” quotes Hannah Hart. The podcast and the video version – Vodcast has seen rapid growth in terms of their consumption.

Vodcasting means Video on Demand cast which is a visual version of a podcast. It has been rapidly used as a powerful tool to communicate with the audiences of a particular brand or personality. Podcasters who integrate a video or record their episodes are known as vodcasters.

Difference between a vodcast and a podcast

Podcasts are purely audio-based content shows which can be varied in terms of their genres from education, raunchy, fun, co-hosted, motivational, fitness and interview. In India podcasting as an industry has seen a meteoric broadening of its spectrum. It has expanded its listener base from about 4 million in 2016 to over 90 million in 2022!

Vodcasts are the newfangled adaptation of podcasts. It is a trend that has started in the past few years as people love to see who’s behind the voice and get a better understanding of the whole process. 78% of people watch online videos each week, with 55% viewing online videos every day. While podcasting is on the rise, video stats are significantly higher when it comes to regular consumption.

Changing trends in vodcasting

Static Image Videos

Many podcasters hitherto use static images relating to the topic of the episode and add a voice behind it.This is the most easiest and widely used technique of vodcasting. All you need is just video editing software and basic editing skills.

The Remote Interview Recording

As the pandemic hit, the whole world turned to online mediums for their work. Organizations and Brands changed their working patterns and everything was made online. Podcasters also started recording their episodes on platforms like Zoom, Zencastr, Riverside, etc. They recorded the whole meeting and did the editing to cut off extra parts and uploaded them on their social media! This was one of the most preferred methods during those times as people feared getting out of their houses and shifted completely to audio and video mediums.

Studio Recording

When podcasters started augmenting their podcasts they shot their episodes in a studio and uploaded them on YouTube. This was another facile way of vodcasting. It simply required a camera and the podcaster would conduct the usual way of audio recording the episode.

Many podcasters have shifted their format of vodcasting to the “couch and mic” format where the podcaster sits on a couch with a mic if it’s an individual podcast. The same goes with co-host and interview podcasts where they conduct the conversation on a couch with the mics recording their audio. Proper shooting locations are booked or the studio set is designed in that way. Simmy Said Whatt?! was a podcast where this kind of approach was seen, later on, many other podcasters started adopting this format making it more lively and relatable.

Vodcasting has become the new go-to entertainment and educational source for the general public. The trends will keep evolving with changing times adapting to new formats! As it is rightly said, we believe progress comes by changing and adapting to the millennial world!
